For 50 years Mott MacDonald has been contributing vast skills and experience to projects across the United Arab Emirates – and winning recognition for our work.
In Dubai we’re working to develop a strategic integrated waste management master plan, which aims to achieve 70% recycling by 2025.
We have worked on many large-scale and iconic projects, including the Um Al Nar power and desalination plants, Masdar City, phase one of Dubai Marina, the Jumeirah Golf Estates, district cooling on Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jumeirah Monorail, the Emirates Float Glass Plant, and Abu Dhabi’s Surface Transport Master Plan.
We continue to work on several large-scale projects in the UAE, including the provision of contract administration and site overview services on one of the world’s largest underground pumping stations, part of the Strategic Tunnel Enhancement Programme (STEP) in Abu Dhabi.
We have also been appointed by the Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) to provide construction supervision services for the infrastructure of Lot 3 at South Shamkha: a mega-housing development 31 miles (50 kilometers) from the city of Abu Dhabi. Our work includes supervision of 50 miles (80 kilometers) of road works, a 68-mile (110-kilometer) wastewater system and 56 miles (90 kilometers) of potable water networks, a power distribution system (including primary and secondary substations), a stormwater drainage network, and provision for a telecommunications network.
Oil and gas
Mott MacDonald is project management consultant on mega projects like Takreer’s Ruwais Refinery Expansion, the 7-year North East Bab Phase III development project, and ADMA-OPCOS’s Lower Zakum 100 MBD program, for which we won Offshore Project of the Year at the Oil & Gas Middle East Awards in 2012.
We won another key appointment as engineer to Sharjah Pipeline Company (a BP JV Company) for a jet fuel storage facility in the Hamriyah Free Zone and a 25-mile (41-kilometer) pipeline linking the new development to Sharjah International Airport. The $13 million project provided infrastructure to support the Emirate of Sharjah’s aviation industry. More recently we successfully commissioned a Class III Petroleum storage terminal facility in Fujairah for Gulf Petrochem. The $110 million project, for which we provided engineering and PMC services, was the UAE National Winner at the MEED Quality Awards for Projects 2013.
Transport
We were project manager for the 50-mile (81-kilometer) Ruwais Bypass, a key part in the Gulf road network. We’re also providing operational safety support and designing all bridges and road diversions and the diversion of overhead power lines on the first rail project in the UAE, Etihad Rail Phase 1.
Waste management
In Dubai we’re working with Dubai Municipality to develop a strategic integrated waste management master plan for the outlook period 2030. One of the key aims of the master plan is to achieve 70% recycling by 2025. Source segregation will be a key driver to achieve this ambitious target, which will put Dubai at the forefront of sustainable waste management.
Education
Our education business in Abu Dhabi is growing. A key success was the inspection of 149 private local and international schools throughout the region. We are working closely with Aldar Academies to explore innovative approaches to Arabic teaching and learning.
Power
We’re helping realize new-build nuclear capacity, including the Braka Power Plant in Abu Dhabi, where we’re providing technical review during design and construction of the seawater cooling intake and outfall structures.
Mott MacDonald contributed to the Taweelah reverse osmosis (RO) project: one of the largest RO plants in the Gulf, constituting a breakthrough in desalination technology.
In Fujairah, we designed and supervised installation, testing, and commissioning of three 400kV double circuit overhead transmission lines and provided design review and site supervision for the 400/132kV Fujairah City Grid Station and surrounding 132/33kV substations, providing capacity for future large developments in the Fujairah area.
Buildings
In the building sector we were appointed to work on the 275,000-metric-ton Grain Reserve in Fujairah as the client’s structural, civil, geotechnical, MEP engineering, and grain health technical advisors.
Our building team has had a long-standing relationship with Majid Al Futtaim since 1997. We've been instrumental in providing structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and public health engineering services to the largest retail projects in the Middle East, such as Deira City Centre, Mall of the Emirates, Bahrain City Centre, and Mirdif City Centre. We were involved in the detail design and site supervision of the mechanical, electrical, public health, fire protection, and structural engineering services relating to the refurbishment of rooms and suites and an extension to the Premium Leisure Club at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai.
We are providing the detailed design for the luxury Dubai Pearl development, which will provide a home for 9,000 people and a workplace for a further 12,000.
